Vaguely interesting (July 16)

(1)  Why the drop in support for redistribution as income inequality rises? It relates in part to self-interest (e.g., increased immigration makes most—but not all—natives better off).

(2)  If you’re a rich kid in college, and you hang out with other rich kids who are economic conservatives, then you’re likely to become more economically conservative in college.

(3)  “[I]ntuition favors behavior that typically maximizes payoffs, whereas deliberation favors behavior that maximizes one’s payoff in the current situation.”

(4)  “[P]erception of crime has rarely matched reality.” (Includes a neat thing where you take a guess at the changing murder rate over the past few decades. It said my guess was better than 97% of other readers, but I’m sure it was just being polite.)

(5)  “[I]n the 17 states with a medical-marijuana law in place by 2013, prescriptions for painkillers and other classes of drugs fell sharply compared with states that did not have a medical-marijuana law.”
